Four Swing, Spring and Flip Club (SSFC) gymnasts travelled to Windsor to take part in the Ontario Provincial Gymnastics Championships April 5 to April 8. In an SSFC media release, it was a snowy drive but everyone arrived safely and ready to compete.

On Thursday, Alyssa Moorehead entered the competition ranked fifth in Ontario in the Level 7 Age 14. She started out on Uneven Bars and was a bit low on her handstands, but scored 9.100. Moorehead then then went on to the Balance Beam, and really pulled things together. She hit an amazing routine, scoring 9.666, which turned out to be the highest Beam score in the competition.

Moorehead proceeded to Floor Exercise and pulled off a nearly flawless back layout in her routine to score 9.566, which was also the highest score for Floor. For her final event, Moorehead competed on Vault. Going in to the competition, she was ranked second on Vault in Ontario so was pretty confident that she could do well. She floated over the Vault with a great front handspring and scored 9.500.

Overall, Moorehead won Gold on Vault, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise, and was 14th place on Bars.

Her total score of 37.832 placed her in First All Around, which won her the title of Level 7 Provincial Champion, qualifying her along with three other Ontario athletes to attend the Eastern Canadian Championships where she will compete against athletes from Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritime provinces.

On Friday, Carsyn Cassidy competed in the Level 7 Age 16 plus group. She placed 15th on Balance Beam with a score of 9.033 and scored 8.883 to take 19th place on Floor Exercise. Cassidy scored 8.750 on Vault to take 21st place and was 24th place on the Uneven Bars.

Cassidy placed 30th in Ontario with a total score of 34.616.

On Saturday, Taryn Strutt was first to compete in the Level 6 Age 15 group. She placed 12th on Balance Beam with a good routine and a score of 9.083 and performed a clean Floor routine to score 9.116 in a tight field, placing 19th.

On Vault Strutt had a few form flaws but scored 8.933 to take 19th place and on Bars she scored 8.450 to take 27th place.

Strutt’s total score of 35.582 put her in 27th place in Ontario.

Aliyah Petronski was next in the Level 6 Age 14 group. She had a great Balance Beam routine and scored 9.583 for 4th place. Her Floor routine was near flawless and scored 9.683 and took the Gold medal.

Petronski continued her great performance with a 9.383 on Vault for another 4th place finish, then scored 8.383 on Uneven Bars for 26th place.

Her total score of 37.032 put her in 8th place All Around in Ontario.

Moorehead had also qualified for Event Finals on Balance Beam and Vault, where the best athletes on each apparatus competed for the single event title. She scored 9.716 on Vault in a very tight race for the Vault title put her in 5th place. She went on to score 9.558 on Balance Beam to take 6th place on Beam.
