forest shot 2016 560The 2016 Dryland Sled Dog Derby was held November 11 and 12 at MacGregor Point Provincial Park.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park will once again go to the dogs as the park will play host to the Sled Dog Sports Association of Southwestern Ontario (SSASO) open North American Dryland Dog Sled Derby November 4 and 5.

A dog sled derby is a unique, cultural, educational, and exciting event that challenges dogs to do something they love - run, with the November event expected to attract approximately 25 sled dog teams from all over Ontario and Quebec.

Each race team must compete in the same race class with the same dogs in both the Saturday and Sunday races with the fastest accumulated time determining the winners. K9 Outdoor Sports and Fat Bike Shop from Fort Erie, Ontario will be on hand to offer beginner demonstrations for Canicross, and showcase physical literacy for both human and dog of any age group or fitness level. Other highlights will include sled dog history and how to get started in canine harness activities.

Spectators are welcome to come out and enjoy the fast-paced world of sled dogs on November 4 and 5 from 9:15am to 3:30pm at MacGregor Point Park, just south of Port Elgin with admission by donation.

Designated race viewing areas will be set up for spectators. While visitors are encouraged to meet mushers and their canine athletes; and to ask questions about the sport and life style, it is requested that they first ask permission before approaching dogs on site and that they leave their pets at home.

Friends of MacGregor will be onsite over the weekend offering breakfast and barbecue lunch items, coffee, hot chocolate and treats. There will be a silent auction at the park’s Visitor Center to help raise funds for next year’s event. Park Ontario issued day use parking passes can be obtained through the park.
