The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks held off the Durham Thundercats on Friday night to capture a 5-3 win in Game 2 of their W.O.A.A. Sr. AA quarterfinal series.
Durham jumped out early to a 1-0 lead on home ice but the Winterhawks stormed back almost immediately with Brendon Haefling tying things up with assists to Michael Johnstone and Jay Thomson.
The 4th line struck again just seconds later as Johnstone converted from Thomson and Greg Thede to give the Winterhawks a 2-1 lead they would hold for the rest of the period.
The Winterhawks killed off a penalty early in the 2nd period and then extended their lead to 3-1 when Blake Underwood scored from Jeff MacDermid.
MacDermid would extend that lead to 4-1 at 12:24 of the 2nd with assists to brother Brent MacDermid and Theo Peckham.
Durham would answer back to make it 4-2 after two periods of play.
The Thundercats picked up a couple of powerplays in the 3rd period and would eventually capitalize with the extra man to make it a one-goal game.
James McHaig would add an empty netter to thwart the Durham comeback, making it a 5-3 final for Saugeen Shores.
The Winterhawks lead the best-of-seven series 2-0 and are back home for Game 3 Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. start at The Plex, sponsored by Bruce Telecom.
