The Special Olympics Flag made a stop in Saugeen Shores last week and was signed by local Olympians during their Bocce Ball practice May 12. The flag is one of six traveling across Ontario, and started its journey of signatures on January 4. The flag relay, hosted by the Knights of Columbus, comes to an end in Guelph at the Special Olympics Provincial Games May 26 to 28 and in Durham Region June 1 to 3.

Six local athletes representing Central Bruce will be competing in the Provincial Games at the end of May. For 5 Pin Bowling Terri Johnston, Justin LaBlance, Carly Underwood and Jeremy Kranenburg will be rolling the competition away. While Jacqueline Gravel and Janet Campbell will be competing in swimming competitions.

Gravel will also be competing Nordic Skiing for the World Olympics in Austria in 2017.

On May 14, Special Olympians and members of the Knights of Columbus, along with the flag, made a stop at Giant Tiger in Port Elgin, raising money by public donations and raffle tickets. Mayor of Saugeen Shores Mike Smith, stopped by to meet the athletes and sign the Special Olympics Flag.

Knights of Columbus member and Special Olympics Chairman, Wayne Caskanette told the athletes that he would donate one dollar for every raffle ticket they sold May 14.

The Special Olympics Central Bruce donation jar collected $182.60, a $100 donation was given from Port Elgin Knights of Columbus plus $61 from Caskanette in all totalled $343.60.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith added one more signature to the Special Olympics Flag, May 14.
