jersey fullThe Saugeen Shores Winterhawks announced they will pay tribute to an integral part of Saugeen Shores' hockey history this weekend. The team will honour the Port Elgin Sunocos on Saturday, January 30 when they host the Mapleton-Minto 81's at The Plex by wearing throwback Sunocos jerseys.

The Sunocos played in various intermediate hockey leagues between 1967 and 1985, which included winning the Georgian Bay Intermediate "A" League championship in 1978-79.

"Saugeen Shores has a rich history in the game of hockey and the Sunocos are a huge part of that," said Winterhawks President Gord Lamont. "Even to this day, people still talk about attending Sunocos games at the old Port Elgin Arena."

The special Sunocos jerseys will be auctioned off during and after the game by Metcalfe Auctions of Mildmay, with the proceeds going to the Liv-A-Little Foundation, which supports Olivia Little of Saugeen Shores in her fight against Cystinosis, as well as finding a cure for the disease.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, Lakeshore Recreation and Rowland's Your Independent Grocer, The Winterhawks will donate every penny from jersey auctions to Liv-A-Little.

"We're fortunate with the great support of our sponsors that we can not only pay tribute to the Sunocos, but also raise money for such a great cause," said Lamont.

In addition, Gord's Pro Shop & Imprints will be selling Sunocos hoodies, t-shirts and fleece crew necks during the game, with $10 from every sale going to Liv-A-Little.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
