Harbourlite Parking Lot Side FullEditor,

The Harbourlite Restaurant has been a part of Port Elgin for many years. The Johnstons are year round residents that contribute to our local economy. Over the years they have hired many teenagers, giving them a great first job experience scooping Chapmans ice cream. I believe this business is a cornerstone of Saugeen Shores and deserves our support.

Many years ago the Harbourlite, in good faith made an agreement with the Town to give up their washrooms and have their patrons use the public ones which would be in a new building along with the Harbour Master’s office. This was agreed to as it was believed to be the best thing for the town.

Now the Town Council is considering The Harbourlite once again having their own washrooms. The problem is the access to their washrooms is still blocked by the town’s building. I believe that if the Town Council wants to make private washrooms for the boaters, that the Town is responsible to first replace the Harbourlite’s washrooms. I do not believe it should be the Johnsons’ responsibility to construct them.

I have always been proud that as our community has grown we have maintained our small town values, supporting each other and our local business economy. With this decision on the table, I hope that continues to be true.

I hope that others feel the same as I do and will show their support for this long time local business, so we can all continue to enjoy ice cream while watching our world famous sunsets.
