Home and Community Support Services (HCSS) Grey-Bruce and a well known Saugeen Shores restaurant are celebrating a year of success after changes to the local Frozen Meals on Wheels program.

HCSS and The Lighthouse Restaurant in Southampton were existing partners in the Hot Meals on Wheels program and in January 2022 set out to improve the frozen meals program in the region.

The frozen meal program had been previous run by purchasing frozen meals from a service in the GTA once per month but HCSS staff felt there was room for improvement so together with Lighthouse owner James Di Adamo, worked to launch a frozen program for their clients.

The meals were created and tested in the Lighthouse kitchen and offer 30 entrees as well as sides, soups, and desserts. A variety of dietary requirements such as low fat, low sodium, gluten free, and vegetarian options are available.

“These changes to our program allow for frozen meals to be ordered and delivered to clients twice per month now. This far better suits the needs of our clients, especially those on fixed incomes and those with limited freezer space," said Colleen Benninger, Meals on Wheels Team Leader in a recent media release from HCSS.

All the frozen meals are prepared and packaged from The Lighthouse Restaurant. “We take real pleasure in serving all of the customers that come through our door each day and are equally proud to be a part of supporting members of our community who benefit from enjoying our meals in their home," said Di Adamo.
