The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Southport are once again commemorating the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women with their 32nd consecutive vigil December 6 at Coulter Parkette.

The event is set to take place at noon at Green and Goderich Street in downtown Port Elgin, and all members of the community are invited to attend.

December 6, 2022 marks 33 years since 14 women were murdered at École Polytechnique in Montreal because they were women. A press release from CFUW Southport said that the many missing and murdered Indigenous women will also be acknowledged.

Speakers this year will be RN Tam Lead Nurse Examiner with Grey Bruce Health Service Sexual Assault and Partner Abuse Care Centre, Ellie Neary; as well as Saugeen Shores Police Chief Kevin Zettle.

Donations, in the form of cash or cheques made out to CFUW Southport, will be accepted on behalf of three local women's shelters, Women's Centre Grey Bruce in Owen Sound, Women's House Serving Bruce and Grey in Kincardine, and Saugeen First Nation's Kabaeshiwin Respite Centre.
