Saugeen Shores is taking part in a pilot project with Second Wind Recycling for Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) recycling. In the final Saugeen Shores Council meeting of 2020, this project is set to begin on December 28, 2020 and will last for a minimum of one year. EPS recycling will be based out of the Southampton Landfill site at 126 Concession 14.

“We are very excited for the launch of this program,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau in a December 14 media release. “Saugeen Shores residents have expressed a desire for more recycling opportunities, so we are pleased to provide this option.”

Items that can be collected must be clean, dry, free of tape and must be marked with the #6 recycling symbol. Accepted items include white packaging from electronics and appliances such as televisions, computers and microwaves. Items not accepted include meat trays, pool noodles, take-out containers, bowls and cups, packing peanuts, insulation panels and polyethylene foam.

Southampton Visitor Centre

Also during the December 14 meeting, Saugeen Shores Council tentatively approved the renewal of the Southampton Arts Centre agreement for the Southampton Visitor Centre. With this agreement for 2021, the same agreement as the reached in 2020, the Southampton Arts Centre will operate the Southampton Visitor Centre at the historic Town Hall for a one year term.

Port Elgin Visitor Centre

Saugeen Shores Council also tentatively approved the one year agreement with Port Elgin Pumpkinfest for the Port Elgin Visitor Centre. This partnership will be similar to the agreement with the Southampton Art Centre and will allow Pumpkinfest to operate the Visitor Centre at 559 Goderich Street. in Port Elgin for a one year term.

The Visitor Centre in Port Elgin will be open for walk-in inquiries and will be responsible to respond to email and telephone inquiries.

Enhanced Winter Services

Town staff have increased outdoor recreation opportunities for the upcoming winter season to encourage outdoor activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The increase in outdoor recreation includes trail maintenance on the Saugeen Rail Trail, increased snow removal in existing winter facilities, additional washrooms and additional waste containers.
