The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is delighted to announce the Saugeen First Nation screening of their co-production 'nîpawistamâsowin-We Will Stand Up' on July 27 as the closing night event of The Fabulous Festival of Fringe Film 2019.

In a National Film Board media release, this award-winning, headline-making documentary follows the late Colten Boushie’s family on their quest for justice in the legal system.

On August 9, 2016, a young Cree man named Colten Boushie died from a gunshot to the back of his head after entering Gerald Stanley’s rural property with his friends. The jury’s subsequent acquittal of Stanley captured international attention, raising questions about racism embedded within Canada’s legal system and propelling Colten’s family to national and international stages in their pursuit of justice. Sensitively directed by Tasha Hubbard, 'nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up' weaves a profound narrative encompassing the filmmaker’s own adoption, the stark history of colonialism on the Prairies, and a vision of a future where Indigenous children can live safely on their homelands.

The film currently holds No. 2 in the Canadian Box Office and so far has won two awards, winner of the Best Canadian Feature Documentary Award at Hot Docs 2019 in Toronto and winner of the Colin Low award for Best Canadian Documentary at DOXA 2019 in Vancouver.

The screening of 'nîpawistamâsowin: We Will Stand Up' is set to take place on Saturday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the James Mason Centre, 47 French Bay Road. Admission is free.
