It was another successful and fun-filled family day at Mowbray's Canadian Tire in Port Elgin for their annual Jumpstart fundraising event May 26.
Jumpstart is a Canadian Tire charity that raises funds to help families cover costs associated with children’s sports and activities with all the money raised from Jumpstart Day in Port Elgin going to benefit the Saugeen Shores community. Funds raised from events like Jumpstart Day are dollar matched through Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program.
This year's event was originally planned for May 25 but was rescheduled to the following day due to stormy weather. “It's the only time we've postponed it,” said Eleanor Mowbray adding that they decided to reschedule when they heard there was a threat of lightning.
A day later, the skies had cleared and the Canadian Tire parking lot was full of family entertainment from a by-donation charity barbecue, the Saugeen Shores Police Bike Rodeo, race cars, Dan Carey's monster truck, Train Wreck to pitching, ball toss, face painting and more.
Although a final total wasn't available at the time of publishing Mowbray said that the total raised through the event was approximately $9,000.
So far this year 39 local children and their families have been helped through the Jumpstart program, Mowbray said, adding that the fall is the busiest time for requests, just before the hockey season starts.
As well as individual children and families, the Mobrays and the Jumpstart program also helped out students at Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) in March of this year when they presented a grant of over $16,000 for the purchase of Nordic cross-country ski equipment which Mowbray said will go to help hundreds of students.
