The Southampton Olive Oil Company is donating over $2,000 worth of olive oil to four area food banks.

In a Southampton Olive Oil Company media release, staff spent time bottling up over 100 medium size bottles of ‘spring crush’ Southern Hemisphere olive oil. As the store brings fresh olive oil every six months, they are able to donate oil that's not quite as fresh to food banks.

Owners Donna and Dave Rudell said that in the big picture these products have over six months of shelf life remaining. "Many consumers don’t understand that certified true extra virgin olive oil only lasts about 18 months from when it is crushed, not from when it’s put in a bottle," read the release.

The Rudells said that although Italy had a poor year for production, there is no danger of Southampton Olive Oil Company running out of product. "If we were in danger of running out, we wouldn’t be donating it to food banks."

Donations will be given to food banks in Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Wiarton, Owen Sound as well as the OSHaRE Meal Program in Owen Sound.
