A new 2019 Peer Support and Study Group is launching in Owen Sound for women who have been hurt by the family law process. HER Grey Bruce will host six Sunday sessions between April 7 and June 16 at the Women's House Serving Bruce and Grey.
This pilot project will focus on increasing women’s knowledge and solidarity and will work to find unique ways to increase public awareness on the issues.
“This is a new group forming for mothers who have been hurt and feel betrayed in trying to protect themselves and their children and create a safe and loving home environment,” said Esther Gieringer, a founding member of HER Grey Bruce. “We want to connect women and raise awareness about the many ways that family law and our culture at large hurt women and our children."
The sessions will be structured in a study group format with a feminist analysis and focus on the legal and cultural roots of the issues. Organizers say that the pilot project is ideal for women who enjoy writing in its various and creative forms, and enjoy reading and learning with each other. They are planning to use articles, videos and the law itself to introduce and examine topics as diverse as patriarchy, the mother/child bond, incest, poverty, classism and the women’s movement today. The sessions will run from 11am to 2pm and light refreshments will be provided.
“We will explore creative ways to spread the discussion and support women of all ages,” Gieringer added. "This is going to be a purposeful and rewarding experience for women seeking justice and freedom from oppression, and who feel a call to action."
