The Southampton Legion Branch 155 has been recognized for being among the top three percent worldwide of Legion membership performers in 2018.

In a February 28 media release, the Southampton branch received a letter of congratulations from Manager Member Services Randy Hayley with Royal Canadian Legion National Headquarters.

"Of 1,400 Legion branches worldwide, your results placed you 41st in 2018," read the letter.

Hayley also asked Southampton Legion President John Willetts to share his local initiatives with other branches to further assist their ongoing efforts and reinforce the membership growth potential.

"In a time where membership in the Royal Canadian Legion continues to fall, and with some branches closing, we are continuing to grow," said Willetts in the media release. "With a little help, I believe 2019 could be even better," he added.

Willetts went on to say that people are really interested in the Southampton Branch. "Not only for our philanthropy and community service work here in Southampton but also as a great place to hold events and banquets, the diner, lounge and terrific social events we host," he said.

"We are a community service organization and open to the public," Willetts said, adding that tens of thousands of dollars go back into the Saugeen Shores community. "We support schools, music, art, history, hospital, museum, community projects, charities and individuals and families in need, as well as servicemen, veterans and their families," he said.

"We are proud of our ability to partner with other organizations like the Cham-bettes and Rotarians and of course running great events," added Willetts. "People want to be part of a volunteer organization where their time and talents produce real results in the community," he said.

From pool leagues, TV bingo, euchre, darts, steak shoots, dances, banquets and social events, there are things happening every day at the Southampton Legion and with their growth, they are looking for additional kitchen and bar staff. Anyone interested can contact the Legion, 13 Grosvenor St N, Southampton or call 519-797-3863.

"I would like to personally invite anyone who has thought about becoming a Legion member, our services or hall, to contact us directly," said Willetts.
