The Saugeen Shores Fire Department, Saugeen Shores Police Service and Bruce County EMS responded to a fire February 4 at 9 a.m. in a residential unit of Skyline Apartments, 764 Waterloo Street, Port Elgin.
In a February 4 media release, emergency services acted quickly following reports of alarms and heavy smoke from a third floor window of the unit. The structural fire was quickly extinguished and damage was contained to the single unit. Two beloved pets were lost despite resuscitation efforts by Saugeen Shores Fire and Bruce County EMS. The tenants of the apartment were not home at the time of the fire.
“Because of working smoke alarms, the other residents of the building were alerted to the danger quickly,” said Rob Atkinson, Saugeen Shores Fire Prevention Officer. “This led to a safe and timely evacuation of the building.”
All other residents were able to return to their units by Monday afternoon. The cause of the blaze is under investigation but the fire is not considered suspicious. Damage to the unit is estimated at $100,000.
