Tania Gilchrist accepted her award from Bruce County Warden Paul Eagleson.

The Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre (BCMCC) is proud to be recognizing one of their many dedicated volunteers. Tania Gilchrist has been volunteering behind the scenes at the Museum since 2003 and now she has received The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers for her service.

In a BCMCC media release, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country and celebrates a wide variety of voluntary contributions. As an official honour created by the Crown, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is part of the Canadian Honours System. The program has incorporated and replaced the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award, which was created in 1995, by the then-Governor General the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc.

With an interest in history and the aim of contributing to the Museum, Gilchrist joined the volunteer team in 2003. At that time, the Museum was beginning the process of undertaking the capital build project. Fifteen years later Gilchrist is still volunteering and contributing her skills at the Museum and throughout she has worked behind the scenes on projects that directly affect the public and their Museum experience in the Collections Department. Gilchrist has also aided new staff, students and volunteers with orientation to the collections department. “I like working in the Collections Department as the artifacts usually have a history that is very interesting; people, dates and stories. The staff at the museum are friendly and a pleasure to work with,” said Gilchrist, reflecting on her experience with the Museum.
