Shortly before noon on Tuesday, June 12, Saugeen Shores fire crews were called to a structure fire at 836 Eastwood Drive in Port Elgin. The home was destroyed and the fire also caused extensive damage to neighbouring property, 842 Eastwood Drive.

Saugeen Shores Police were first on the scene and with help from neighbours determined that residents were not at home at the time of the blaze although it was later discovered that a family dog had been lost in the fire.

The rear of the property showed plenty of fire early and challenged the firefighters to prevent cross over to other nearby residences.

The property directly west was evacuated and firefighters managed to prevent fire from damaging the home.

Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Phil Eagleson said that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, adding that “although we contained this fire well, both homes are heavily damaged.”

Crews stopped the fire from spreading to other neighbouring dwellings and “contained the fire to the exterior of the adjacent home although it has significant smoke damage,” said Eagleson.

Eagleson added that due to the current dry conditions and the amount of water required, the Town implemented a temporary ban on outdoor water use.
