The Rotary Club of Southampton invited potential new members to an informal interest meeting about the work of their club in the community and around the world.
From a Southampton Rotary media release, the event took place June 6 at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre where the club mounted a series of displays of their activities ranging from the new accessible splash pad, literacy programs, and many other local and international projects.
Details of the club’s various fundraising activities were also on display from Winterama to the Huron Shore Run to Charity Golf Tournament, and Dinner Auction, not forgetting the many burger flips and fish fries.
Ristorante Rosina in Port Elgin provided a delightful selection of feature hors d’oeuvres.
Club President Ed Braun introduced a video that was produced last year by a group of students from GC Huston Public School illustrating the work of the Rotary Club. The video is available on the club’s youtube channel: https://youtu.be/5xk4i1vtGwI.
The President then went on to say that the club had a special relationship with the school and that they had watched with admiration the revitalization of the “Home of the Hawks” by the Principal Dan Russell. It was with some sadness that Southampton Rotary recently learned that Russell would be leaving the Southampton school to take up a new appointment in Owen Sound.
To recognize Russell’s achievements in improving the school’s performance, the Rotary Club of Southampton bestowed an Honorary Membership to Mr Russell.
Persons who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals and those persons considered friends of Rotary for their support of Rotary’s cause may be elected to honorary membership.
The President then announced the completion of the $50,000 pledge to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation for the ER/Laboratory Expansion. A cheque for the final installment of $10,000 was made to a representative from the Hospital Foundation.
A highlight of the evening was the auction of a specially commissioned painting by renowned local artist Darlene Watson with the proceeds going to Rotary funds.
President Elect Sylvia Sheard gave a short talk on “Busting the Myths of Rotary” and thanked everyone for attending and she looked forward to welcoming new members to the club.
