Over the past two months, the Children and Junior Youth of the Port Elgin Missionary Church have been battling it out to see who could donate the most food for local Saugeen Shores food banks.

From a Port Elgin Missionary Church submission, as part of the church’s emphasis on local outreach, this Food Bank Challenge was a great way for kids to understand the Biblical mandate to 'demonstrate love one to another.’

The Port Elgin Missionary Church kids brought in everything from canned goods to juice to bags of rice; and even 60 pounds of potatoes arrived just in time to distribute for Easter. In all, over 350 pounds of food was donated to the Living Hope Food Basket and the Salvation Army Food Bank.

As the massive balancing scales were fully loaded up on Palm Sunday, March 25, the scales tipped in favour of the Junior Youth. The prize for the winning group was a shave-off/hair styling session for their respective adult leader.

Since it was a tight finish both leaders were subject to the same hair treatment in front of the entire congregation. Cory Longmire and Dawn Edgcumbe were great sports as their respective group had some hair-raising fun, all for a good cause.

Port Elgin Missionary Church is located at 650 Green Street and is open from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Thursday collecting non-perishable food items and hygiene products for local food banks year round. Donations are gratefully accepted and distributed regularly.
