Bruce Power and Motion Electric Motor Services entered into two agreements valued at more than $17 million to support significant life extension upgrades in both Bruce A and Bruce B.

“Motion Electric is a recognized industry leader in electrical equipment refurbishment, and the scope of work for these contracts will contribute to extending the life of our reactors,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power President and CEO. “Partnerships, like this one, aid in the success of our life extension program by bringing innovation and technology that is critical in forming a long-term, high-performing team effort to deliver our projects on-time and on-budget.”

In a November 16 Bruce Power media release, Motion Electric Motor Services will perform upgrades on Bruce Power’s standby electric generators as well as various electric motors. The standby generators power equipment for cooling the reactors in the event of a major power outage. Upgrades to the generators will consist of mechanical refurbishment as well as enhancements to the gearboxes. Current conditions of the electric motors will also be evaluated and mechanical and electrical reconditioning will be made based on the results.

“Motion is proud to partner with a flagship of Ontario's economy. This agreement secures and creates quality jobs in Ontario,” said Patrick Lambert, Business Manager at Motion Electric Motor Services. “Through this partnership, Motion Electric Motor Services plans to invest nearly $1.4 million over the next 18 months to hire skilled labour and modernize its workshops.”

The operation of the Bruce site through 2064 will create and sustain 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually, while creating $4 billion in annual Ontario economic benefit through the direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies, materials, and labour income.
