Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre is hosting a special screen of the documentary “Niigaanibatowaad: FrontRunners,” by filmmaker Laura Robinson, on Saturday, July 15.

In 1967 when Winnipeg hosted their first Pan American Games, 10 First Nation teenage boys ran from St. Paul, Minnesota to Winnipeg, Manitoba with the Pan-Am torch. Despite having run 800 kilometres, when they arrived at the stadium they were not allowed to enter. Instead the torch was given to a non-Indigenous runner who was given the honour.

In 1999, 32 years later, Winnipeg again hosted the Pan-Am Games, the province of Manitoba issued an official apology and the original runners finished their journey to ignite the Pan-Am cauldron.

“Niigaanibatowaad: FrontRunners” is the story story of these 10 boys with four of them being in attendance at the screening.

This event is proudly presented by the National Film Board, Unifor and the Society of Energy Professionals. Doors open at 7 pm, tickets are $8 for Museum Members and $10.00 for the non-members.
