Bruce Power will support the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s new Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Advancement Partnership (EHVAP), which seeks to advance low-emission vehicle technology.

“The advancement of EVs is an important opportunity to help the provincial and federal governments reduce their greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, which is the second largest contributor to emissions in Canada,” said James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Environment in a June 7 media release.

In the Province of Ontario, the transportation sector is the largest source of GHG emissions.

“A major focus will be to contribute policy research and recommendations on the building of appropriate charging infrastructure to support the growing fleets of zero-emission vehicles across Canada,” Scongack said.

In 2016, Bruce Power co-authored a report, titled ‘Accelerating the Deployment of Plug-in Electric Vehicles in Canada and Ontario.’ It explored ways to build upon existing policy frameworks at the federal and provincial levels with respect to plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). It also highlighted opportunities to accelerate and optimize the decarbonization capability of EVs.

Bruce Power will support the government with participation in the EHVAP. The province is moving aggressively to accelerate the deployment of low-emission vehicles by committing up to $439 million over four years to initiatives such as incentives, research and charging infrastructure through its Climate Change Action Plan.

EHVAP was launched by The Hon. Glen Murray, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, in 2017 as a framework within which partners across Ontario will contribute to advancing the uptake of electric and hydrogen vehicles in Ontario.

“The primary goal of this partnership is to help the province reach its electric and hydrogen vehicle sales target of five per cent in 2020,” Minister Murray said. “It seeks to engage all types of partners including automakers, dealerships, dealer organizations, electricity providers, advocacy organizations and government to support the uptake in low-emission transportation.”

Bruce Power will also continue to support the development of the federal ‘Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy,’ announced by the Government of Canada in the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.
