As winter comes to an end and the snow starts to melt, we start to see something else on the ground. Coffee cups, plastic bags, cigarette butts and other pieces of litter have accumulated throughout the winter. A little spring cleaning is needed to freshen up the community and make a difference for the environment.

In an April 11 media release, the Town of Saugeen Shores, in partnership with Eastlink, will be hosting Spring Cleaning Week April 22 to 29, 2017 with local schools, individuals, businesses, community organizations and clubs encouraged to organize a group and register for an outdoor clean up. The Town will provide gloves and bags for everyone in the group and will pick up the garbage bags after the cleanup.

This year, the first 150 volunteers will also receive t-shirts as a thank you gift for getting involved.

“Whether it’s a group of friends, family or co-workers, many hands will make light work of beautifying our community,” said Lisa Billing, Recreation Supervisor with the Town of Saugeen Shores. “It’s a great opportunity to get outside and make a difference in the community.”

Groups can register for Spring Cleaning Week by calling 519-832-2008 extension 125 or online at saugeenshores.ca/springcleaning. Shortly after registering online, groups will be contacted to confirm clean up details and arrange for the pickup of supplies.

For those who cannot commit to registering for a cleanup, the Town will also be hosting a 20 Minute Makeover on Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. Community members are encouraged to head outside for 20 minutes and clean up the area around their residence or business.
