The longest day of the year in 2017 will feature a party in the sky as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, Canada’s famous air demonstration team, will be taking over the Saugeen Municipal Airport (SMA) in Hanover on June 21.

Phillip Englishman, Secretary for the SMA, presented a delegation to Saugeen Shores Council during the March 13 Committee of a Whole, where he asked for financial support for the event.

The Bruce County stop will be one of 60 air shows in which the Snowbirds will perform during Canada’s 150th year. The show will take place in the evening with the choreographed airshow lasting 30 to 50 minutes.

“It’s going to be the biggest party Bruce County has,” said Englishman to Saugeen Shores councillors. The event on June 21 will be free for visitors but the cost to run the show totals $39,000. Englishman, who has been visiting municipalities in the area, has already secured funding and support from Kincardine Council, the County of Bruce, who will be paying for accommodation and Hanover, Brockton and West Grey who will play host to a meet and greet with the Snowbirds on June 20.

A T33 figher jet cockpit will be featured on the ground with visitors having an opportunity to sit and have their photo taken.

A model airplane show with three First World War aircrafts which will participate in a ‘dog fight’ with airplanes from the Great War Flying Museum and ‘turbo-beaver’ that will be parked for people to walk around.

The OPP Golden Helmets motorcycle team will demonstrate while the Saugeen Flyers support the event.

Saugeen Shores Council will consider supporting the event financially at a later date.
