On a day where the weather provided a little bit of everything, the Saugeen Shores Firefighters braved it all as they collected food and cash donations for the local Food Bank.

On November 26, firefighters from Saugeen Shores’ two fire stations, Station #50 in Southampton and Station #60 in Port Elgin, collected donations from generous shoppers at three locations in Saugeen Shores: in Port Elgin at Rowland’s Independent and Walmart; and in Southampton at Foodland.

Ed Giles of the Salvation Army Community & Family Services Food Bank, located in Maple Square Mall in Port Elgin, gave praise to the local firefighters. “We'd just like to thank them for partnering with us and it’s very much appreciated. It goes a long way,” he said. “What doesn't get used up at Christmas helps out with the January glout. The need is always there.”

Giles and his team finished weighing the groceries on November 29 and in total the firefighters collected 1,852.5 pounds of groceries, which included everything from baby food to toilet paper. A total of $1,492 in cash was collected.
