Tasty treats on offer at the Southampton Art School's sixth annual Bake Sale on Saturday, November 26 didn't last long. The event ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and were sold out of all the baked goodies by 1 p.m., said Southampton Art School Director Darlene McConnachie, raising a total of $820 for the school.
Artist and one of the day’s volunteers, Jo Ann Sturgeon, said that all the tables they had laid out in the art school were full, with approximately 300 packages. “Everything went quickly,” she said, adding that people started arriving 30 minutes early at 8:30 a.m.
Sturgeon said the Chantry Island Cham-bettes annual Christmas Garage Sale being held at the Boat House, just behind the Art School, helped with attendance as people would come for both events. “The more the merrier,” said Sturgeon.
Funds raised will go to help support the Art School, a registered charity. “There's all manners of things that we have to install. We need new lighting for [the school], we need all kinds of different things in order to operate and we have children’s classes too that we provide all of the art supplies for. They don't have to bring anything. So we have all kinds of different expenses,” Sturgeon said.
She also spoke about the school’s new winter open studio which began November 1 and will run until April 30. “It's for anyone who wishes to come and paint,” she said. “There's no formal instruction but there's lots of support and encouragement and criticizing and just a fun environment to paint in.” Sturgeon added that they are currently accepting guest artists as well as those beginner to professional into the program. “It doesn’t matter if you’ve ever held a brush before, there’s lots of support,” she said.
She added that participants need to bring their own art supplies but the school provides table space, easels, a print press as well as washroom and kitchen facilities.
