Although wind gusts of over 30 kilometres postponed the Canada Day fireworks display on Southampton on July 1, it did not diminish the spirit of the community at the annual festivities. From face-painting by Port Elgin’s Main Event, to the annual barbecue provided by the Southampton Rotary Club, to the Cham-bettes and their popcorn, there was lots of activities under the flag in Southampton.
The Chantry Singers performed O’ Canada, God Save the Queen and Happy Birthday to a rather large crowd after opening remarks from Mayor Mike Smith, who expressed gratitude to the community and invited everyone back to the 150th celebration next year.
The Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce organized the event and sold 50/50 tickets and glow products. Chamber General Manager Joanne Robbins said it was unfortunate that the high winds had affected the fireworks but said everyone who attended had a positive and polite attitude.
“We got our celebration tonight and now we’ll just extend out celebration until tomorrow night (July 2),” said Robbins.
A second attempt at fireworks will take place Saturday, July 2 in Southampton after dusk at the end of High Street.

The Chantry Island Cham-bettes were out in full force, selling pop, popcorn and Southampton cards, July 1, at the Canada Day celebration.
Southampton Rotarian Pat O’Connor mastered the grill at the annual Rotary Barbecue.
On the left, Southampton’s sunset piper Michael Smith, piped down the sun to a large crowd on Canada Day. Smith can be seen doing this every Friday night throughout the summer. On the right, with pride and sentiment Jenny O’Reilly was easily the best dressed at the celebration under the flag in Southampton.
The Chantry Singers, led by Anne Little, performed many songs including O' Canada, at the July 1 Canada Celebrations in Southampton.
