firesafety 560The Saugeen Shores Fire Department, along with Huron-Kinloss and Kincardine, is asking its citizens and guests to be fire safe this holiday weekend.

As of Thursday morning the three municipalities do not have fire bans in effect but ask that fire safety be followed when enjoying the holiday weekend.

“Conditions are dry but not to the point where a fire ban is required,” said Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Phil Eagleson.

Please adhere to the following fire safety tips this weekend:

Never leave your fire unattended and always have means of extinguishment to put the fire out.

Recreational fires must be small and contained. Regulations require that recreational fires be smaller than one metre in diameter.

Avoid large open air burns. Residents should wait until the dry conditions improve before burning brush piles.

Fireworks should be lit in a safe place away from buildings and people.

Paper sky lanterns are also a concern for are fire departments. Thin paper lanterns that light by flame from the inside are uncontrollable fire hazards “because the wind decides where to deposit the lanterns,” said Kincardine Fire Chief Kent Padfield.

“We want our residents to be safe and have a great Canada Day weekend. These tips will ensure they have a safe long weekend,” added Huron-Kinloss Fire Chief Chris Cleave.
