The community came together again Saturday night at the Maple Hall in support of Saugeen Shores Police Constable Andy Stewart and his family who lost their home to fire in the early morning hours of March 11.

Adam Sachs, Vice President for the Saugeen Shores Police Association said the evening was to be “nothing too formal”. There were donations of time, food and supplies, as well as a variety of auction items from businesses and community members.

“He’s like our big brother,” Sachs said of Stewart. “This was his retirement year so kind of tragic circumstances... kind of a life change [retiring] then a tragic life change,” he said.

Alex Rodbard of Ibbq4u donated his time to cook two turkeys plus a 100 pound pig. “After cooking weight it’d be 94, 95 pounds,” said Rodbard.

Enough to feed the close to 100 guests who attended the event. In addition to dinner and a live auction, a cash bar and live entertainment was on hand.

Patrick Main and Greg Pahl from Kincardine were providing the entertainment. Main said when the two perform, they play “a little bit of everything,” to which Pahl added, “classic rock to modern stuff.”

Les Ribey donated his auctioneering services, where prescription glasses from Carey Optical, a fishing rod from J&S Tackle and a 42” RCA flatscreen television, from the Saugeen Shores Police Service were among the items on offer.

“Everything with the auction...has been donated,” said Chris Schaidle, Constable with the Saugeen Shores Police Service and a neighbour of the Stewart family. “Whatever comes out of the bar is going to go to the family as well so there’s no profit off of this for anybody involved,” he said.

In an April 26 email, Sachs said, “I am happy to report we raised $5,000. Thanks to everyone who helped and came out. I am even happier to say the Stewart family seemed to have a great time.”
