“If you're familiar with The Amazing Race, the show, it's similar to that but it's not a race,” said Martin Bouwhuis, Southampton Rotary Club member, in an interview March 29. “This is where teams of driver, navigator, go out in a set course and there are questions and check points and things along the way,” he added, speaking about the club's newest venture, a Summer Road Rally taking place this August.

True to Rotary’s mandate to “create positive, lasting change in our communities”, the Summer Road Rally event is another means to that end. “The whole premise is to fund raise,” said Bouwhuis. “Everything we fund raise is for either the people, the families or the community.”

Beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, the Rally will take participants along a scenic route, “about two to two and a half hours long, all in [a relatively small section of] Bruce County,” visiting historic sites, stopping at various check points and being asked skill testing questions along the way, ultimately guiding drivers and navigators to the Rally’s ending point. “The questions all relate to things in this area,” said Bouwhuis.

The details around the starting and ending locations, as well as the exact route the Rally will take, are still being finalized.

An entry fee of $20 will includes a Rotary barbecue at the end of the route and prizes will be awarded to all winning teams. “The winning team will win by getting the most answers correct,” Bouwhuis said.

Pledge sheets are available through Southampton Rotary Club members, Southampton Rotary’s Facebook page, Saugeen Shores Hub (info@saugeenshoreshub.ca) and Explore the Bruce. Space is limited so register early.
