Police continue to have problems with speeders on Concession 10, Huron Street, Concession 6, Carlisle Street, High Street and Lake Range Road. Over the next few weeks, police will be showing zero tolerance for speeding in these and other areas. Speed limits are set where they are for safety reasons or hidden drives or just the conditions of the area. Please respect the speed limits set.
Going 70 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, the fine is $95 plus three demerit points, 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone is $220 and four demerit points.
The lasting effect this has on your licence and insurance is expensive.
There were a total of 119 incidents between February 1 and February 7, 2016.
On February 7 at 12:05 a.m. police responded to a complaint of two female refusing to leave a downtown Port Elgin bar. The two females left once police arrived.
On February 6 at 1:59 a.m. police stopped a vehicle in Port Elgin for a driving offence. The male had an odour of burnt marijuana on his person and displayed signs of impairment. The driver was tested at the scene by a Drug Recognition Expert DRE. Investigation revealed methamphetamine in the vehicle and in possession of the female passenger. A 28 year old Hanover female and a 34 year old male from Paisley were charged with possession of methamphetamine. The male was also charged with breaching an undertaking.
At 4:23 p.m. police responded to a single vehicle collision on Concession 6. A driver lost control on Concession 6 by 13/14 Sideroad and struck a hydro pole. The pole was snapped off and Hydro One had to attend to secure the wire. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
At 11:43 p.m. police responded to an assault complaint in Southampton. After investigation a 20 year old Saugeen Shores male was arrested for assault and held for a bail hearing.
On February 5 at 5:05 p.m. a scam was reported to police where a person received a letter indicating they had won a BMW or $74,000 in cash. The letter instructed the winner to send money and personal information first to receive the winnings. No money was transferred. This is a scam.
On February 3 at 3:51 p.m. a local resident received an email from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) indicating they were to receive a rebate. This person recognized this as a fraud and reported it to the police.
At 9:47 p.m. police responded to a report of an assault at the Legion in Port Elgin. One pool player was upset at another and assaulted him. A 29 year old Saugeen Shores man faces assault charges.
On February 2 at 8:13 a.m. police received a report of an assault that happened Saturday evening at the Wismer House. Police are investigating.
At 1:53 p.m. police responded to a complaint of people on the ice in the Port Elgin Harbour fishing. The fishermen felt they were ok. People are reminded to be very caution when walking out on the ice, especially this year.
At 7:00 p.m. police responded to a break and enter at an abandoned house in Southampton. Two males were observed going inside. No damage, no apparent theft.
On February 1 at 11:12 a.m. police investigated the report of a theft of $426 in cash from a Waterloo Street apartment. At 2:46 p.m. police arrested a 23 year old Saugeen Shores male on three warrants issued by Waterloo Regional Police. The warrants were for Breach of Probation times 2, and fail to attend court. He wass held for a bail hearing on a Saugeen Shores Police charge of breaching conditions of a release.
At 5:30 p.m. police received a report of a driver striking a dog on Highway 21.
