Saugeen Shores Police Service is investigating a robbery that took place on December 23 at the Mac’s Convenience Store in Port Elgin.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., police received a report that a man, wearing a balaclava had just robbed the store while brandishing a knife. After threatening the store clerk, the male fled the store on foot. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. Police were provided with a description of the suspect.
A short time later a police officer observed a man who he believed to be the suspect on the rail trail behind Wellington Street in Port Elgin. The man fled but was quickly located again and arrested by police. The suspect was in possession of the balaclava and money was recovered.
The weapon involved has not been recovered. Police request that residents in the areas north east of the Macs Convenience Store, surrounded by Goderich, Elgin and Tomlinson streets and the Rail Trail contact Saugeen Shores Police at 519-832-2500 if any suspicious objects are observed.
A male, age 31, from Saugeen Shores is in police custody and will be appearing in court today. He is charged with Robbery with a weapon, s. 344(1)(b) CC; Disguise with Intent, s. 351(2) CC; Weapons Dangerous, s 88 CC; Utter Death Threats, s. 264.1(1)(a) CC; Resisting arrest, s. 129(a) CC and Possession of Stolen Property, s. 354(1)(a) CC.
