The Saugeen Shores Fire Department with the assistance of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and the Saugeen Shores Police Service have concluded the scene investigation of the cause and origin of the boat fires that occurred at the Port Elgin Harbour in the early morning hours of October 27.
• Explosion at Port Elgin Harbour
• Quick response likely prevented further damage
The incident was not arson related and no criminal activity is suspected. The fires were a result of an explosion which resulted from a mechanical failure.
The initial explosion occurred in the bilge of a 1974 36 foot Trojan boat and the resulting fire spread to the adjacent boats.
No persons were in or on any of the boats at the time of explosion.
Clean up of the boats and the scene will be prompt and is expected to be begin within the next two weeks.
Although access to the Harbour parking lot area is now open, members of the public are asked to avoid the remaining secured area around the incident for safety reasons.
Damage to the washroom building is now being repaired and the building is currently closed until repairs can be completed.
We would like to thank the public and the Port Elgin boaters for their patience and cooperation during the investigation.
