Atkinson began his career with the Town's fire department in January 2003, beginning as a volunteer firefighter, joining the team on a full time basis in 2006. He later moved into the role of Fire Prevention Officer before becoming Deputy Chief in 2022.
With more than 23 years of experience, the Town says Atkinson "brings extensive knowledge and expertise" to the role.
Atkinson assumed the role on June 22 with formal appointment occurring through Council By-law on July 6.
After four years of service, now Former Fire Chief Melanson has left the Saugeen Shores department to join the City of Niagara Falls.
