Police lay 81 charges in coordinated traffic blitz
A coordinated four-day commercial motor vehicle enforcement initiative involving the Grey Bruce OPP and multiple policing and provincial partners has resulted in significant enforcement action.
The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a four-day Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) enforcement initiative on June 1 to 3 and June 5, focussed on ensuring compliance with provincial legislation and improving road safety by targeting commercial CMVs operating throughout the Grey-Bruce region.
Over the course of the blitz, officers conducted a total of 95 CMV inspections, resulting in 81 charges for various violations and 41 vehicles being deemed unsafe and placed out of service.
The violations identified included mechanical deficiencies, improper documentation and other safety-related infractions that pose a risk to public safety.
This operation highlights collaborative efforts of participating agencies including Grey Bruce OPP, Owen Sound Police Service, Saugeen Shores Police Service, Hanover Police Service, West Grey Police Service and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario.
The Grey Bruce OPP acknowledged all partner agencies for their cooperation throughout the enforcement initiative and said commercial motor vehicle safety remains a priority, reminding commercial motor vehicle operators and companies of their responsibility to ensure vehicles are properly maintained and operated in compliance with all applicable laws.
Four charged with gun and drug charges
The Grey Bruce OPP have charged four individuals following a traffic stop in the municipality of Grey Highlands. On June 7 at approximately 8:36pm, members of the Grey Bruce OPP were conducting patrols on Margaret Elizabeth Avenue in the municipality of Grey Highlands, an officer's Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera alerted to a vehicle indicating a Highway Traffic Act offence. A traffic stop was initiated. During the investigation, the officer detected an odour of cannabis, leading to an investigation under the Cannabis Control Act.
Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located a loaded 9mm pistol. Police also seized approximately 36 grams of suspected cocaine and approximately 37 grams of suspected fentanyl.
A 19-year-old male, a 19-year-old female and a 21-year-old female, all from Brampton, were arrested and charged with possession of a loaded restricted firearm , knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm, occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a restricted weapon, careless storage of firearm, unauthorized possession of restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of weapon, occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, two counts of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, for cocaine and an opioid.
The fourth, the driver of the vehicle, a 20-year-old male also from Brampton, faces the same charges in addition to facing two additional charges for driving without insurance and no valid permit.
All accused were held in custody pending a bail hearing on June 8 before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.
