Students from six Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) secondary schools recently demonstrated their skills in debating, diplomacy, negotiation, and responsible global citizenship among their provincial peers.

The 53rd annual Southern Ontario Model United Nations Assembly (SOMA) conference held in Toronto last month brought together student delegates from far and wide for an international relations simulation event. SOMA is the oldest secondary school-run Model UN conference and the largest in Canada.

By taking on the personas of UN representatives, students learn about global issues and work together to devise peaceful and productive solutions to complex problems.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland was the guest speaker at the event.

BWDSB had excellent representation at SOMA with members in five of the participating school groups receiving awards.

Saugeen District Senior School (SDSS) participation in the SOMA Model UN event included some first-timers and some seasoned veterans. Students were delegates representing a wide range of topics and countries, an experience allowing them to develop skills to last a lifetime.
