Cheryl Porter of Port Elgin was the winner of the last draw in the second annual Saugeen Shores Healthcare Lottery. This year’s lottery had four monthly prize draws with one final 50/50 jackpot draw held in September. In an Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF) media release, Porter's name was drawn live on 98 the Beach when it was announced that she won $11,890.

The SMHF's annual lottery helps to raise funds for needed medical equipment. This year’s funds will go toward the purchase of four new defibrillators for the Southampton hospital. Total funds needed to purchase the defibrillators is just under $80,000. This equipment is crucial to help hospital staff monitor heart rhythms, defibrillate someone out of a life threatening arrhythmia and externally provide a temporary pacemaker to a patient in crisis. These same life-saving functions can be utilized along with monitoring vital signs when transporting a patient.

Foundation Executive Director Tracy Murray said she was thrilled with the community support of the lottery. While COVID-19 precautions slowed physical ticket sales at retail locations, strong phone orders helped pick up the slack, said Murray.

SMHF gave a special thank you to Mowbray’s Canadian Tire for sponsoring the 2020 lottery as well as the local retailers who carried the tickets, including Mowbray’s Canadian Tire, Ralph’s, Tiny’s, Square Deal Neil’s, Kristen’s Pharmacy and Martin’s Home Hardware. Thanks also were extended to 98 the Beach for partnering with SMHF for event promotion and draw announcements.

The Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation is hoping to announce details of the new lottery later this fall and said they will be running an online 50/50 with quarterly draws throughout the year. Pending AGCO approval the first round will begin late October with the first lucky winner being announced shortly before Christmas.

SOUTHAMPTON RESIDENTS' ASSOCIATION

Southampton Residents’ Association announced that proceeds raised for SMHF through their 2020 “Non-Golf Golf Tournament” will be dedicated to the campaign for new defibrillators at the Saugeen Memorial Hospital.

“We had a wonderfully successful fundraiser, raising more than $14,000 for the Hospital Foundation,” said SRA President Bill Bowden. "And we had fun doing it, dedicating the money to the defibrillator project is an excellent choice for us," Bowden added.

Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation Executive Director Tracy Murray said, “We are delighted that the SRA has stepped forward to dedicate this money to our project. The SRA contribution really helps us kickstart our campaign," Murray said.

LIV-A-LITTLE FOUNDATION

This year the Liv-A-Little Foundation donated a portion of the proceeds from their annual Paint the Town Purple campaign to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation. The Foundation's Olivia Little presented a cheque for $1,500 to the Foundation, $1,000 of which was raised through Paint the Town Purple with the additional $500 being dollar matched from the Wismer House in Port Elgin.
