On May 11 a strong gathering turned out for the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's in Saugeen Shores.

Close to 100 participants enjoyed a sunny day at picturesque Fairy Lake in Southampton as they took part in the second annual Saugeen Shores event. Organizers and volunteers distributed blue and white buffs and t-shirts while walkers enjoyed snacks and had their faces painted before heading out on the path around the lake.

Event Co-ordinator Melanie Myers acknowledged sponsors as well as GC Huston Public School for donating furniture, Joseph J Entertainment for blasting some tunes, Wendy Wood for face painting, Jen O’Reilly for taking pictures and Bruce County Beef Farmers Association and Tim Hortons for providing snacks and drinks.

“Fundraising is always optional,” noted Myers. “It’s not just the money, we’re raising awareness too," she said.

Even so, Saugeen Shores raised over $12,000 in pledges, contributing to the 2019 Grey Bruce goal of $100,000. The Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce hosted simultaneous events in Hanover, Owen Sound and the Town of Blue Mountains in support of the over 1,000 families across the two counties who live with the disease.

Penny Gingrich spoke on behalf of the June Bugs, the largest team at the event. Gingrich walked for her mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. “It’s a sad disease but I’m glad that we can all enjoy this beautiful day and support it," she said.
