There's still time to register for the 2019 Rotary Huron Shore Run, scheduled for Saturday, June 1 in Southampton. In a phone interview April 30, June Van Bastelaar, co-organizer of the event, remarked on the success of the Huron Shore Run over the last decade.

“We had between 800 and 900 [registrants] in the last year," said Van Bastelaar. "It’s grown from when I first got involved 10 years ago when we had 125," she said.

With sponsors in place and t-shirts on their way, Van Bastelaar said their focus is now on recruiting volunteers as it takes 70 to 80 volunteers to manage the event. Van Bastelaar is also excited to announce that local photographer Jen O’Reilly is returning this year to capture runners in action.

Once again, a myriad of activities surround this Class A Athletics Ontario accredited race, setting the pace for a another memorable weekend in Saugeen Shores.

Back by popular demand, Noodle Night in Southampton will kick off the weekend on Friday, May 31 with an evening of carb-loaded meals from restaurants along High Street. Not just for runners, these dishes are for anyone with an appetite for a hearty pasta plate. Participating restaurants include The Walker House, Rm 797, Outlaw Brew Co., Little Black Dog, Highview Food & Drink and Duffy’s Fish & Chips. Visit the Southampton BIA website for pricing and menu options.

Bright and early Saturday morning runners will want to 'Run to Southampton' and take advantage of hot deals in store. Many Southampton shops will open their doors at 8 a.m. to offer race day specials. The Southampton Meat Market will have 10% off for all bib-wearers and Martin’s Bicycle Shop is offering 20% off all their nutrition products. From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thorncrest Outfitters will be offering 20% off storewide and Southampton Olive Oil Company will offer 10% off with a ‘Run to Southampton’ promo card.

The post-race Saugeen Paddle organized by Thorncrest Outfitters will take place at 2 p.m., on Saturday, June 1 and will offer discounted rates for race participants or proof of a Rotary donation. The Paddle follows the Saugeen River for an approximate two hour paddle from Bruce Road 3 to Denny’s Dam.

Also taking place at the Southampton Coliseum is the Town of Saugeen Shores' Health and Wellness Fair from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Here you will find local businesses and organizations providing products and services to nurture your health and wellness needs.

Of course, amidst all the hullaballoo will be the main attraction. The Rotary Huron Shore Run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with the half marathon. Kids taking part in the PLAY Fun Run will take off at 8:30 a.m. Then beginning at 9 a.m. 10k runners will set off, followed closely by the 5k run, the 3k run and the 5k walk.

Proceeds from the Rotary Huron Shore Run go to support Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Rotary Clubs of Port Elgin and Southampton and the Saugeen Track and Field Club.
