Over $75,000 was raised for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation's (SMHF) annual needs Light the Way campaign through 98 the Beach's 12 hour Radiothon December 13.

“It's absolutely amazing since our original goal was $50,000,” said SMHF Executive Director, Tracy Murray, adding that final totals would not be known for a few days.

Grey Bruce Health Services Charitable Giving Advisor Willard VanderPloeg, who was busy manning phones and taking donations at the radio station during Light the Way Day, said there was a variety of donations and that people were challenging others to give. "Whether it's neighbours or businesses, colleagues, it's great,” he said.

“It's pretty shocking,” said morning host at 98 the Beach Brian Longmire. “Time after time we go, 'Wow, where's it coming from,' but we have a generous community," he said.

Light the Way Day took place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Longmire said by the time he finished his morning show at 10 a.m. they had already raised $20,000.
