bicyclekids 560In celebration of Ontario’s Bike Month the Town of Saugeen Shores has initiated a friendly challenge between local elementary schools. The Bike to School Challenge will take place between June 12 and 16 and encourages students to ride their bikes to school each day.

“Biking is an excellent way for children and families to be active together. For parents that normally drop your kids off at school, I challenge you to participate too,” said Lisa Billing, Recreation Supervisor of the Town of Saugeen Shores. “Biking is good for the body, good for the environment and just all around good fun. It’s hard not to smile when I am riding my bike.”

In a June 8 media release from the Town of Saugeen Shores, teachers will take a tally of how their students travel to school each day. The winning school will be announced the week of June 19 resulting in a tree for their school yard donated by SauGreen.

Other prizes include a pool party donated by the Town of Saugeen Shores and Chamber bucks for adult champions donated by the Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce.

“We encourage parents to practice a safe route to school with their kids,” said Billing. “A trial run will help foster confidence for both parents and their children before they head off to school on their bikes in the coming week.”

As children take to their bikes all road users - cyclists, drivers and pedestrians - are reminded to engage in mutual respect on our roadways. Slowing down, using extra caution and following the rules of the road are simple ways to keep everyone safe while travelling around Saugeen Shores.

In order to safely enjoy riding your bike, here are some tips to consider from Parachute Canada:

1. Wear a helmet. When properly worn, a helmet can reduce the risk of a serious head injury by up to 80%.

2. Be prepared. Know the rules of the road. Use hand signals and respect traffic signs.

3. Check your ride. A fun & safe cycling experience starts with a properly equipped bicycle. Check the height, tire pressure and brakes.

4. Be a role model. Set a good example and practice safety together.

The Bike to School Challenge is a result of community collaboration and May’s bicycle-friendly community workshop hosted by the Town of Saugeen Shores. Staff wish to thank community supporters and local volunteers.
