The time has come for long-standing Port Elgin restaurant Burger Trail to close its doors after 42 years of serving some of the tastiest food in town.

Owned by the Kalogiros family since 1979, matriarch Kitsa said in an August interview that restaurant regulars are sad that Burger Trail is closing but happy for the family. “It’s kind of nice, the thought of retiring, but it’s kind of sad to let it go. But it’s time”. Kitsa and husband Jim, will now enjoy their summers on the beach and spending more time with their grandchildren.

Since announcing the end, Burger Trail has seen a steady stream of regulars and travellers making their pilgrimage to the burger restaurant to get their final taste, with burger-heir Steve Kalogiros calling their final days “off-the-charts busy”.

On Thursday, September 8, members of Tiny’s Motorcycle ATV repair held a “Bike Night” where riders on 32 bikes from Saugeen Shores and as far away as Owen Sound and Hanover came together to show-off their bikes and have one final burger at the iconic restaurant. Muriel Thaw of Tiny’s said that everyone enjoyed their time together.

“Bike Night came together after Jason Beange and Tiny (Chris Steingart) thought we should have a farewell burger at Burger Trail in Port Elgin. They have been a mainstay for many residents here and we hate to see them go. The day started off with rain but the sun came out just in time for our event,” said Thaw September 9.

Steve was flattered and humbled from the support of those who showed up for Bike Night. He noted that it was pretty cool; unfortunately the employees were too busy to check out the bikes but he has enjoyed looking at photos online.

“I asked people to take lots of pictures and post them And it was great the weather held up too. The turn out was fantastic. Very flattering and humbling all of the love and support,” said Kalogiros.

Burger Trail’s last day is September 10.
