The Ziegler Castle Lumber Peewee Girls team of 18 hockey players took our capital city of Ottawa by storm. Well, okay, it didn’t quite play out with a winning on ice script. Little did they know that their hockey competition would be as strong as the cold snap was deep in late December 2017.

Already winners by entering the ‘Hockey on the Hill’ contest and being selected to play in what for many may have been their biggest ever hockey tournament, the players tested their mettle against division teams from Nunavut, Ottawa, and Nova Scotia.

Tournament organizers had to abandon the outdoor hockey games due to the extreme weather and while Coach Bryan Tedford said the team was disappointed not to play on the Parliament Hill Canada 150 rink, organizers provided the team and their families with a heated change area and an invitation to join an open skate on a warmer day, scoring some delicious beaver tails before leaving.

Coach Tedford said the girls’ tournament experience had added enjoyment with pin trading and a skills competition. “The girls traded pins with the teams we played and those from the same hotel,” he said, adding that the girls met some players from Timmins representing the Northern Ontario team who joined some of the his team to take in an Ottawa Senators game while others enjoyed the Canadian Science and Technology Museum.

“I was thankful that no one got injured and of course the girls had fun in the pool and enjoyed running around the hotel we stayed at in Gatineau,” said Tedford.
