Twenty-four teams competed in the Port Elgin Curling Club Super Spiel, November 20 to 22, the clubs 32nd Spiel, where $5,000 and first place was awarded to the Deruelle team from Brampton. The top six teams in the Spiel were from Brampton, Brantford, London, Kitchener, Peterbrough and Kitchener, with six local teams from Port Elgin, Tara and Paisley competing.

Super Spiel Chair, Earl Anderson said the event was full with six teams on a wait-list. “We re-imagined the Spiel with a little different focus three years ago - to bring in more professional teams, and to bring a different quality. We’ve been told by several teams who play at a provincial level that they’re coming back,” said Anderson during the tournament, adding that the exceptional ice at the Port Elgin club had a lot of teams talking.

“We have great ice, not what they’d expect in ice quality from a club up here, and that’s coming from the Deruelle team, the Tuck team, and Katie Cottrill [Listowel Team] who’s played in the Scotties [Canadian Women’s Curling Championship] so she knows good ice,” Anderson said, explaining that the club had brought in professional ice makers to educate the club in the past.

The Deruelle team beat the Tuck team from Brantford 8-3 on November 22 to claim the title and winnings.tuckteamlistowelpaisleyderuelle
