Heaps of snow brought joy and loads of family fun to Coulter Parkette during the Port Elgin BIA’s inaugural Snow Fest winter festival, February 18.

Day one of the three day Family Day weekend event drew crowds who surfed down a “Snow Mountain”, made snow balls and snow paintings while families took part in a pickup road hockey game on Green Street.

The unseasonably warm winter’s day was welcomed, with organizer Steff Allen of Port Elgin saying that if needed there could be more snow added.

“We’ve got a good turnout, it’s a nice weekend, tons of fun outside, with warm weather to get outside with the kids,” said Allen.

The event takes place until Monday, February 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, with road closures taking place on Green Street from Goderich Street to Waterloo Street until Tuesday morning.

“We have s’mores going, the snow paint, I have a radar gun to track the speed of snow balls or slap shots, impromptu road hockey, and ‘snow mountain’ with snow to make snowmen or snow forts.” Allen admitted that with the unseasonably warm weather that things could get sloppy.

“Dress for the weather and be prepared to get dirty, there’s lots of paint and lots of time to get mucky in the snow,” she said.
