The Northport Elementary School Senior Band was awarded a gold standing as a result of their performance at the Georgian Bay Regional MusicFest March 28 which earned them a spot at MusicFest Canada, a national competition taking place at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa May 15 to 17.

Under the keen guidance of former music teacher Andrea Rideout, the Grade 7 and 8 students have been rehearsing regularly to prepare for the big performance and on May 1 the Senior Band was presented with a cheque for $1,000 from the School Community Council (SCC) to assist with the costs of the trip.

Northport Principal Suzanne Kennedy noted that one of the biggest costs is the entry fee. When accommodations and travel expenses are factored in, the trip is quite expensive. The cheque, along with a number of fundraising efforts carried out by the students, will help alleviate some of the burden.
