After school on March 18, the cast and crew of École Port Elgin Saugeen Central School’s (ÉPESCS) Into the Woods upcoming musical production were busy getting ready for opening night. The school’s gymnasium was teeming with excitement during their first dress rehearsal as they maneuvered props and fashioned costumes, catching a glimpse of what they had created.
The students have been working since October and short of a few glitches, Production Director, Grade 7/8 French Immersion teacher Lianne Lamontagne, said she was pleased with the students' progress and is confident they'll be ready for showtime.
The students will be rehearsing every day after school until the curtains rise on March 26. Approximately 25 cast members and 20 crew members have been busy organizing props and costumes, designed and built sets, worked on lighting and sound, recited lines and practiced choreography. It’s truly a student run production Lamontagne, proudly admitted.
The story follows a baker and his wife as they wander through a fantasy land inhabited by many familiar fairytale characters, searching for a way to start a family. The baker is played by Sarah Ferris and Cindy Liu plays the baker's wife. Both students are relatively new to the spotlight but not the least bit discouraged. When asked if they were nervous, they casually shrugged.
“I’m not, not nervous,” responded Ferris.
Evening performances will be held March 26 and 29 at 7 p.m. with a matinée performance at 2 p.m. on March 27, all taking place at École Port Elgin Saugeen Central School, 504 Catherine Street. Tickets are a minimum donation of $2 and are on sale at Rabbit Dash in Port Elgin, Harrigan’s in Southampton and at the school. Proceeds will be used to upgrade the school's sound system.
