The Southampton Arts Centre is proud to host a three part exhibition featuring the vision and works of Bert Henderson, founder of the Centre’s Art School in 1957.
“Sketches Revealed” is the first part of the exhibition which will showcase Bert Henderson’s sketches and drawings that span decades over his artistic career. The sketchbook was once a staple of every art school and artist and the importance of drawing was a means to develop ideas. The sketches that will be on display, and available for purchase, will provide us with a glimpse into the detailed process in executing final painted works. Visitors will experience the importance of drawings in the creative process.
The exhibit opens at The Southampton Arts Centre on August 3 and runs through to August 12, where sketches will be showcased in the Art School and Gallery at 121 High Street. A reception is being held on Sunday, August 6 from 6 to 9 p.m. Both Bert and Bettina Henderson will be in attendance.
Admission is free for both the exhibit and reception. Original drawings will be available for purchase.
“We are honoured to be sharing the legacy sketches and drawings by Bert Henderson,” said Darlene McMurdie, Director of the Southampton Arts Centre. “If you have an interest and passion for art, you will not want to miss this retrospective of work by this esteemed artist.”
“This exhibit showcases our commitment to providing a destination for art instruction and artistic cultural expression, while providing memorable experiences for our visitors,” she continued. “We are looking forward to celebrating our 60th anniversary and we are proud of our roots.”
McMurdie said the initial advisory panel Bert Henderson chaired for the school included Alex Colville, Lawren P. Harris, A.Y. Jackson and Arthur Lismer, the latter three, painters in The Group of Seven.

A juried selection of art work created by individuals who have been touched by the Southampton Arts Centre will also be exhibited alongside a group of works by Bert Henderson.
“Henderson – The Paintings” is the third and final part of the exhibition and will be held August 2018 at The Southampton Arts Centre.
