letters home 560“We got back with nothing more than a few harmless bullet holes through our wings. I think, Molly Bawn, and I say it in all seriousness - that your prayers for my safety really mean something for I have been face to face with death so many times.”

The riveting story of World War I pilot, Captain Charles Eric Robertson, is the centre piece of “Letters Home,” an original play by Authentic Voices Productions where theatre and history merge in a celebration of our area’s rich heritage. The play also explores the remarkable stories of challenge and triumph of other Bruce County notables including Dr. Margaret MacKellar, a missionary doctor; and other area trail blazers such as Agnes Macphail, Henry Cargill and David Milne.

Blending the provocative messages of this original script with period music and dance, “Letters Home” promises to engage audiences of all ages – in honour of the 150th celebrations of Bruce County and Ontario.

The Southampton premiere of “Letters Home” will take the stage at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre on Wednesday, July 19 at 7 pm. Gala tickets are $20 plus HST and will include a pre-show reception, complete with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The night’s festivities will kick off with entertainment provided by the AVP ensemble followed by a keynote address by local war historian Clarence Kieffer regarding the accomplishments of the Bruce 160 Battalion and the efforts that local Canadians played in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The night will culminate in the performance of “Letters Home.”

Additional performances of the play will also occur at the Museum on August 9 and 23 at 2 pm with Museum admission. Reserve your tickets for the Gala by calling the Museum at 519-797-2080.

If you are interested in witnessing history unfold up close and personal then be sure to visit the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre this summer. On most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout July and August, key exhibits at the museum will come to life with historical drama, dance and song provided by the AVP ensemble. Become a crew member on board the HMS General Hunter during the War of 1812 or a student at the historic school house or travel to the newest exhibit, “The Last Frontier.” And don’t be surprised if soldier Victor Tranter, poetess Isabella Valancy, settler Mrs. Spence or others strike up a conversation with you, all dressed in period costumes.
