A man above men was crowned winner at The Wismer House’s inaugural Chicken Wing Eating Contest March 31. In a harrowing experience nine men entered the contest to see who could scarf down the most wings coated in an Outlaw Brew Co. barbecue sauce in under 30 minutes. In all 276 wings were dominated with the winner, Rick Thibodeau “The Bearded Builder” of Owen Sound, demolishing 54 wings in total.

Aaron Ruimy “Señor Gut-Hole” got through 38, while third place went to Shaun Schedler “El Diablo”, who ate 32 chicken wings.

The Bearded Builder said that it was just like any other day of overeating and had prepared himself by eating a little breakfast, having a couple of shakes and relaxing before the big event. “They were great tasting wings, but they were quite rich so it really got hard after I hit 40 to really get that down, it really took a lot of mental concentration,” said the winner. He went on to say that his competitors were “good sports” but they will have to bring their “A-game” if they're going to compete against him next year.

The Wismer House owner Jeff Carver admitted he didn't have a favourite going into the event but wanted the “biggest glutton to win”.

“People were a little more civilized than I expected but all in all everyone had a good time. It was pretty entertaining and a lot of fun and I can’t wait to do it again,” said Carver.

Contestant Brian “Snoop Longy Long” Longmire, who usually prefers honey-garlic sauce on the side, got through 24 wings in the 30 minute period but admitted to having a pizza before taking part in the event. “I thought that I would get a fantastic deal on wings,” said Longmire as he was suiting up. He credited his time on the Wismer House's baseball team as time served practicing for the eating extravaganza.

Judge Laura McInnes said that every contestant had to eat the entire wing off the bone, with judges making sure that every wing was eaten. “If they drink the glass of water on the table they’re disqualified; and if they regurgitate, they’re disqualified,” said McInnes.
